A mountain to climb

by Pure Destinations Email

Pure Destinations recently sponsored an associate, Robert Simpson, who was attempting to complete the Etape du Tour, which is more commonly recognised as the stage of the Tour du France that members of the public can ride. In 2009, this stage returned to the Mont Ventoux, not previously used by the tour since 2000.

This stage of the tour consists of a gruelling 167km ride that culminates in a 21km climb up Mont Ventoux. From looking at the gradient map he sent through with his request for sponsorship, the final 21km looked almost vertical!

Robert undertook this incredible challenge to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. A friend of his had passed away from through stomach cancer and he kept his focus on conquering the disease and then cycling the Etape du Jour. Sadly, he never got the chance. So Robert and a team of his friends decided to take the challenge on.

Robert has always had an affinity with the Alps. He has owned a chalet in Grindelwald, a beautiful part of Switzerland in canton Berne, and has always enjoyed cycling in the mountains. However, nothing had prepared him for the training necessary to complete this climb and months of hard work had to go into a rigorous training regime.

I’m pleased to say that Robert completed the stage and in doing so raised over £5,000 for the Macmillan Cancer Support. If you would like to make a donation to this fantastic cause – visit: http://www.justgiving.com/tomfischer/
